Matter at Hand
Matter at Hand was an off site exhibition at Squirrel Haus Arts in conjunction with the 2019 Conference for the National Council on the Education of Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in Minneapolis, MN. The show featured works by Allison Rose Craver, Katie Coughlin, and Kate Roberts.
Matter at Hand explores the relationship between clay and fiber, as seen through the lens of three artists firmly rooted in ceramic training, traditions, and dialog. As craft materials, clay and fiber carry historical and technical baggage that makers must embrace or actively reject. Both fields have wrestled with their position in the contemporary art world. The artists included in this exhibition combine clay and fiber through processes that weave, mend, and imbed themes of labor, nature, and time into their work. By joining these materials each artist erodes historical barriers to expand the material and conceptual possibilities of her practice.
